Know What You’re Signing Up For (aka the Long Haul)

You might note that even though you have spent some time getting to know who you are as an eater, I haven’t prescribed an exact solution for permanent change. No … it’s not because I am avoiding you! It is because I don’t think I can solve the world’s eating issues with three prescribed personality types—there are as many food personalities as there are eaters! This exercise is intended to provide one more facet of self-awareness and help in the understanding that dietary changes need to speak to who you are as an eater or they will likely fail. All of those fad diets try to tell you that there is one way for you (and the whole world!) to eat—those plans leave you high and dry before you can say diet. This book is not about telling you what to do. You’re a grown up … you get to choose.

Un-Junk Your Diet provides four plans of nutritional attack, from broad sweeps to the micromanaged, which you can follow to the letter or … you can mix and match to your heart’s content what you mine from the nutritional gold in these pages. Want to go on a nutritional boot camp to motivate you for a year of slow and sustained change? Go for it! Gluten sensitive and need to alter my nutritional recommendations—of course! My only real rule is that you have to be realistic about what will work for you and NEVER give up because you ate a plate of nachos. A rigid all-or-nothing attitude will impede real progress.

Maybe you would like to be the person who simply follows the twenty-eight-day meal plan for life, but in reality you know that if you choose the food swaps option you will never need another diet again. In fact, I am describing myself here. That was the purpose of our little food quiz exercise. Your answers don’t lie (unless you did, in which case—go back and be honest!). If you are uncertain about where to go, look back at your answers so you can start from exactly where you are. Then, as you read along in the book, allow that understanding to help you select a path forward that speaks to you. Each food plan will also begin with reminders on why you might like to choose that specific path.

Another question to ask yourself right about now is, how ready are you to change? If you are reading this book, you are likely open to the idea of change, but how much space do you have in your life for focusing on your health? If you are going through a particularly stressful or busy time, such as a divorce or loss of a loved one, a huge and critical project deadline at work, or recovering from an illness or injury, now might be the worst time (or the perfect time) for big change.
